I had a conversation the other day with Jim Martin, the school board member for the AHS district. He informed me of the status of the AHS building.

There is a new high school to open in the Fall of 2005 called Ocoee High School. It will take some of the southern AHS students. In the next few months, groundbreaking will begin on the land between the current AHS and Vickers Road on phase 1 of the new AHS building. At the same time, groundbreaking will also begin on a new high school on Hiawassee near 441. In 2007, both the new AHS phase 1 and the Hiawassee school will be completed. Some students will be transfered to the Hiawassee school, the rest moved into the new AHS building.

The current AHS facility will be torn down except for the gymnasium. Then phase 2 of the new AHS will begin construction. The new AHS will include an aquadic center.

I forgot to ask him if they were going to keep the pond and Darter statue out front. Hopefully they do and clean it up. For those who haven't seen it in a while, it looks pretty pathetic. It looks as though it got painted blue with a paint brush, almost as if vanidilized. I'll try to post a current photo when I work on the History page.
